Diabetes

Diabetes: can cause changes in nearsightedness, farsightedness and premature presbyopia.  It can result in cataracts, glaucoma, and decreased corneal sensitivity; however, the most serious eye problem associated with diabetes is diabetic retinopathy.  This occurs when there is a weakening or swelling of the blood vessels in the retina, resulting in blood leakage, growth of new blood vessels and other changes.  If left untreated, blindness can result. Tight control of blood sugar levels is critical in minimizing your risk of developing retinopathy.  If you are diabetic you should have annual eye exams with your Optometrist to monitor your condition and follow any progression.  Diabetic retinopathy can be treated with laser therapy in the early stages and other surgeries are available in more advanced cases.
